WIP Wednesday – Handspun Hip Granny Tunic

IMG_1628

Remember that crochet kick that I started at the first of June?  I’m still picking away steadily at my projects but a little slower than at the beginning of the month.  Other time commitments always seem to creep in when it is crochet-time.

Today I want to share with you the progress I’m making with my Hip Granny Tunic.  I have both the front and back of the top crocheted and sewn together and now I just have to get cracking on the sleeves and the bottom border.  I’m loving the crazy colors and the squishy snuggliness of this handspun yarn when it is all crocheted up.  I’m thinking about adding in some recycled sari silk to the sleeves just for a little extra craziness.  I’m looking forward to wearing it already!

So what have you been working on?  Got any crochet on the go?  I’d love to hear all about it!

Its A Handspun Crochet Kind Of Day

handspun crochet

Today has been one of those strange days of off and on rain, so, between trips out to work in the garden, I’ve been working on a fun new handspun crochet project.

1 lb of Luxury Singles

I came across Hip Granny Tunic yesterday and was itching to start it immediately.   Taking a dive into my stash, my “Queen’s Garden” handspun seemed like the perfect choice.   I decided to wait until the kids were in bed and the housework was done (dang housework getting in the way of my crafts!) before starting and I had the entire front of the tunic finished by the time I went to bed.  And just so you all know, I’m one of those people who finds it almost impossible to stay up past 10PM so you know that it works up fast!  lol

Today I’ve been trucking right along with the back and hope to finish the piece before bed tonight.  The yarn looks so yummy when worked up in crochet … it reminds me of the colorful street art that you see in some cities.  LOVE!

I’m hoping to have a picture of the front and back joined for my WIP Wednesday post later this week.  Stay tuned!

May Handspun

IMG_1480

I can’t believe that it is time to share another month’s spinning already.  May really seemed to fly by!

My first spin was 4oz of Polwarth in “The Giving Tree” colorway by Northbound Knitting.  It is a beautiful progression in light and dark greens and brown.  LOVE!   This baby was spun up as an N-plyed fingering weight yarn.  I’m thinking that it would really like to be mittens.

dijon

My next spin was 4 or my 8oz of BFL in “Dijon” colorway by Spunky Eclectic.  This was spun as a fingering weight single and will be paired up with my Pheasant in BFL/Silk for the Fine SAL/ Romi KAL happening in the Spunky Eclectic group on Ravelry.   If you’re interested in joining the fun, you can find out more info at the previous link and jump right in!  This gal is planning on knitting Carson.  It is going to look so yummy in Pheasant & Dijon!

laceweight

The next was a “just-because-i-can” spin.  I had 4oz of really lovely BFL in my stash that I decided to spin as a laceweight single.  I’m planning on dying with a semi-solid and eventually knitting it into a fun shawl.  I don’t have any specific pattern picked out yet but I know that I REALLY wants to be a pretty lace shawl.

pembrokefarms

And last but not least is 4oz of really gorgeous fiber that I picked up at Pembroke Farms during the Celebration of Sheep and Wool.  I got to practice my long draw and I got a beautiful and light, bouncy, bulky weight 2-ply.   It was such a delight to spin!  I’m looking forward to my next trip back to the farm so I can pick up more of this delightful fiber.

So May’s spinning total was 16oz, bringing me up to a total of 6.5lbs so far this year.  I’m half way to my goal!

WIP Wednesday – Posturing Socks

IMG_1452

Socks are starting to become like shawls to me … I need to have a pair in the works at all times.  This time, I have chosen 4oz of really lovely fingering weight rambouillet handspun from my stash.  The colorway is “Posturing” by Hello Yarn and it makes me think of summer sunsets, citrus fruit, and tequila sunrises.  LOVE!

The pattern is Simple Handspun Socks . I almost always choose toe-up socks for handspun because I want to make sure that I get to use all of my handspun and that I don’t run out.  Plus its a nice and simple pattern that I don’t have to think too much about while knitting :-)

I’m trucking right along on the first sock … I’ve finished the heel and started on the leg.  I don’t see these taking too long to finish as I’m hooked on watching the colors shift and change as I knit.

So what are you working on right now?  Do you have socks on the go or are you admiring any new sock patterns?  I’d love to hear!

In this week’s FO Friday post, I’m happy to share with you my finished Pogona!

Pogona is a fun, geometrically shaped shawl by Stephen West, that is perfect for showing off handpainted fiber.  I chose to knit this from my handspun Wensleydale in “Scarecrow” colorway by Spunky Eclectic.   I love the warm and inviting colors and my friend W. says that the colors and stripey-ness of the shawl remind her of some of the beautiful mushrooms growing in the woods. I only ended up using 6 out of my 8oz of this yarn so I still have another 2oz of this yummy fiber to play with.  Yay!

I used the recommended 4.0 mm needles for my Pogona and it yielded a nice sized and beautifully drapey shawl that just begs to be snuggled in.  I am gifting this shawl to a fellow spinner with an obsession with longwools (just like me!) and I really hope that she enjoys wrapping up in it.

What’s on your needles?  Finish up anything new?  I’d love to hear all about it!

WIP Wednesday – Posturing

IMG_9781

While taking progress pictures of my Barndom shawl and my Inglenook socks for today’s post, I came to the realization that I hardly ever take work-in-progress shots of my spinning.  So, for this week, I’ve decided to forgo the pictures of my knitted items and feature my spinning.

Pictured above is yarn that I am VERY excited about spinning up (but really, when am I NOT excited about handspun?  lol).  This is my first experience with both Rambouillet and Hello Yarn hand dyed fiber.  Love, love, and LOVE!  The Rambouillet is soft and fluffy, quite like merino to spin, and the color in “Posturing” colorway are to die for.  I am spinning this fiber up with the intent of navajo plying it into a beautifully bright and springy fingering weight yarn for, you guessed it, more awesome handspun socks.  For you spinners out there who have never made a pair of socks out of their own handspun, I highly recommend that you do.  I’m certain that you’ll be hooked!

What projects are you working on now?  Tried anything new and exciting recently?  I’d love to hear all about it!

FO Friday – Orchid Thief

I’ve been wanting to knit an Orchid Thief for ages now and finally decided it was time.

I had originally started this pattern in some lovely magenta colored handspun Shetland but the yarn kept telling me it wanted to be something in garter stitch so who am I to argue with the yarn?  I had some purple linen, some snowy white Kidsilk Haze, and some beautiful teal alpaca laceweights in my stash all wanting to be knit but in the end it was the bamboo that won out.  And I am so glad that I chose this yarn.

The yarn is Belfast Mini-Mills Bamboo Laceweight and it is so soft, silky, and drapey when knit up (especially into lace).  It also has a sheen to it so it give it that extra something.  It makes such a light and airy shawl … I love it!

As far as actual knitting time, this project definitely counts as a knitting binge … I finished the shawl and blocked it in under 6 days!  It felt like ages since I’ve knit lace because I’ve been having such a blast with colorwork lately, so when I started knitting the shawl I just couldn’t put it down.

What projects have you been working on lately?  Is there anything that you just can’t seem to put down?  I’d love to hear all about it!

October Handspun

October was another big spinning month for me.  I finished spinning my 12 lbs!  And I also got to try out some new dyers and fibers that I haven’t worked with before or that I haven’t worked MUCH with.

The first yarns pictured are fingering weight singles spun from 8oz of Shetland in “Jazzy” colorway from Southern Cross Fibre.  I am in love with the deep, rich, semi-solid magenta of this fiber.  I had originally planned to knit an Orchid Thief shawl but after starting the project, I felt that the yarn was calling for garter stitch.  It really sparkles when knit into garter stitch so I frogged my shawl and started on Stonecrop which is absolutely perfect for this yarn.   I’m still knitting Orchid Thief but I’ chosen a lovely bamboo yarn from my stash that it working out great.

My next spin was 4oz of Finn in “Feast Of Kings” colorway by Two If By Hand.  It was my first time spinning Finn and it was very fun.  It yields a bouncy, light, springy single which I put some extra twist into because this fun fiber had socks written all over it.  And it is shaping up into fantastic socks indeed!  You can see my WIP shot here.

Next was 4oz of Polwarth in “Going Bush” colorway by Southern Cross Fibre.    I love the bright autumn-y hues in in this colorway.  It makes me think of falling leaves, pumpkins, and crisp fall air.  This yarn is also destined to become some awesome socks.

These skeins above were my first of two spins for October of BFL/silk and let me tell ya, if you haven’t spun this yet … do it, do it, DO IT!  This 4oz was spun up as fingering weight singles with a bit of extra twist in the colorway “Medieval” by Southern Cross Fibre and you guessed it, this yarn will someday soon be transformed into socks.  I might have a serious sock spinning/knitting addiction. lol

This yarn above was spin #2 of BFL/silk for October.  It is 6oz of the Spunky Eclectic Club Fiber colorway “Pheasant” spun up as a light fingering weight.   This yarn has shawl or stole written all over it!  It is drapey and delightful.  I haven’t picked out a pattern for it yet but it will tell me what it wants to be eventually.

And the last skein for October was 4oz of light fingering weight singles spun from a natural, creamy BFL.  This baby has shawl plans as well and it might even hit the dye pot too!  I’m thinking something Stephen West-ish for this yarn …

So October was a very productive spinning month for me.  Lots of fun new yarns and fibery daydreams … a big goal achieved … and more yummy sock yarn for my sock-yarn-deficient stash.  Even though I reach my 12 lb fiber goal, I’m not stopping yet.  Stay tuned for my November handspun post next month to see all the goodies I’ve been working on.  I’m might be working on my hand carding and woolen spinning, playing with some sparkley fiber batts, and dying up some fun in my kitchen …

So what kinds of projects do you have on the go now?  Are you knitting, crocheting, spinning or dying up anything extra special?  I’d love to hear all about it!

Just Hangin’ Around

Eight ounces of Shetland all spun up and hanging to dry …  A new handspun shawl is on the horizon.
