FO Friday – Water

20758362555_566a1b73d4_o IMG_0073 20732097866_9351d6df4e_oExcited to share another new-to-me fiber with you!  For the July club shipment from Southern Cross Fibre, we were treated to 110g of Eider wool in the colorway “Water” or “Lily.”  This is the ever-so-dreamy “Lily” colorway.

Previous to this month’s shipment, I had never heard of Eider wool.  “The Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook” had no information on this breed, that I could find, so I scoured the internet looking for a little more info.  Also known as German Whiteheaded Mutton, the sheep are classified as dual purpose and the those that produce the white, crimpy fleece, as Eider.  The wool is classified as a long wool and I have to say that I have immediately fallen in love.  While some may not find this next-to-the-skin soft, it yields absolutely perfect sock yarn. The yarn is bouncy and crisp, a feeling much akin to Corriedale.  I would LOVE to get my hands on some more!

For this particular bump of fiber, I chose to spin it as a 2 ply worsted weight fractal yarn.  I find the colors peaceful and serene and any socks knit from it would be excellent read-a-book-by-the-fire kind of socks.

Now, I’m off to start spinning some new fiber (you’ll have to stay tuned to find out what!).  I hope you have a wonderful weekend and that you find some time to play with wool 😉
