Gairlock Trail

The only ones in the woods

Just one of the unique trees along the trail

Using Jim for scale, you can see the impressive amount of snow down on the trail.

Snowshoe tracks

Lichen that looks like fairy floss.

Taking a well deserved break.

Nothing better than hitting the trails first thing in the morning for some snowshoeing! A friend and I had made plans to do Gairlock Trail today and, while our morning started out at a pretty chilly -14, that didn’t dissuade us from getting out and enjoying the crispy air.

Being the only ones on the trail is a real treat. We got to experience the quiet beauty of the woods and the pristine snow with the occasional serenade from a pack of yipping coyotes off in the distance.  The snow was pretty deep and we had  hard old slog in places but you just can’t beat getting out and enjoying these beautiful winter days.

What are your favorite ways to spend the winter?  Do you snowshoe or ski or is it fairly mild where you live?  Do tell!
