We had the incredible delight of picking our very first sun-ripened nectarines from our tree today! Since our growing season tends to be rather short here on the Island, locally grown peaches and nectarines are a rarity so our first harvest was a moment of wonder, amazement, and happiness for us.
We started this tree four years ago from a pit after reading this article and have enjoyed watching it grow from a tiny little seedling into a very tall tree.
Kirby is 6′ tall so you can see in the picture above, how tall it has grown from that once tiny little sapling. It is approximately 14′ tall now!
While we picked, Judah and Willow sampled the fresh fruit and it definitely met their approval. We’ve all been having a good snack on them and our faces and fingers are quite sticky with their sweet juice. We plan to eat our fill this evening and freeze the rest so we can enjoy a lovely treat during the winter months.
There is enough fruit left on the tree for two more pickings once they fully ripen.
What are your favorite late summer/early fall treats? Do you grow some of your own fruit? I’d love to hear all about it!

I love them too! It’s amazing it only took 4 years for it to grow that big.
Nature truly is amazing, isn’t it!
These are gorgeous! I’m having fruit tree envy right now! We are going to pick our prune plums today (before the raccoons get them), and harvest a few apples on Saturday for cider pressing. Best time of year!!
Now I’m envious! I love apple cider! There used to be an Apple Squeeze every fall when I was growing up and people would come from all over to watch and participate in making cider, drinking it, and enjoying a wide variety of apple dishes.
