1 lb of Luxury Singles

Worsted Handspun Singles

Just finished spinning up 1lb of the most glorious fiber batts.  Picutured above is the last 6oz waiting to be skeined and soaked.  The other 10 oz are hanging to dry on my drying rack as I type.

The January challenge in the 12 in 2012 group was to spin singles.  I am really good at spinning sport, fingering, lace, and cobweb weight singles but the thought of trying to spin worsted weight singles is enough to send shivers up my spine.  Isn’t it funny how when we start out spinning we produce these super chunky and thick yarns  and constantly aspire to spin thinner and thinner yarns and once we master these it is SO FREAKING HARD to spin those thick yarns we originally spun up?

So my goal this January was to spin lovely, lofty worsted singles and I did it!  There are a few thick and thin spots but I am really quite happy with the consistency of my spinning and it was quite a challenge.  I chalk it all up to experience and a little preparation for trying out some of the lovely textured yarns in Jacey Bogg’s “Spin Art”  DVD (can’t WAIT to try out some of these!).

I’ve set this yarn aside for a super cozy and soft Croci Sweater which I plan to knit a little later in the year and I definitely feel better prepped for an upcoming textured yarn spinning binge (I totally feel this one coming!).  Plus, spinning outside my comfort zone made me feel really AMAZING and want to do it some more.

So if you’re part of the 12 in 2012 group or just spinning for the joy of it, I challenge you this year to try new things, spin outside your comfort zone, and to make incredible handspun yarns that you never in your wildest dreams though you could.

So what’s on your wheel or spindle?  I’d love to see!
